Attic Insulation Tips
Most insulation contractors are experienced enough to know that the typical attic insulation project calls for painstaking detail in order for it to be a success. Unfortunately, many of today’s attics are not properly insulated, whether by the homeowner themselves, or, believe it or not by a professional, resulting in a complete waste of energy and an increase in monthly bills.
The attic floor is not air sealed properlyInsulation is but half of the energy-saving solution, the other half is air sealing, this means sealing every opening in the attic floor. So it is important that the new construction and retrofit project first seal any cracks or holes with caulk or expanding foam. Make sure to use firestop or fire barrier caulks, the following are a few other areas to check:
-
Open soffits. Many of the framed soffits on the floor may have been left open. Cover these with rigid insulation and seal all the edges with some caulk, then insulate them as you would normally.
-
Spaces between the attic floor framing and flues and chimneys. The gap between attic floor framing and chimneys must be done within code, however, the space needs to be closed for energy efficiency. Use some aluminum flashing and a high-temperature caulk to make sure that these openings are sealed.
-
Openings for pipes, ductwork, wiring, and electrical boxes. In all nonconditioned spaces, make sure all the ductwork is insulated and the joints associated with the ductwork are sealed too.
Bear in mind you cannot air seal using either cellulose or fiberglass insulation. While these materials are important when regulating your home’s temperature, they sadly don’t stop air from leaking into the home. A combination of air sealing and batt or blown-in insulation will make the most when it comes to energy savings.
