Blown-in Insulation – Lifespan and Perks

What Is the Lifespan of Blown-in Insulation

Knowing when your attic insulation will deteriorate is vital to every homeowner. So the question should be how often should attic blown-in insulation be replaced? Your pre-existing insulation won’t keep its protective properties indefinitely. After around 15 years, homeowners should consider getting an audit done on their insulation.

The Lifespan of This Insulation Type

‍Because it is efficient and economical, blown-in insulation is widely used. In most homes, loose-fill insulation will last between 80 to 100 years before it needs to be replaced, provided it is not damaged in any way. If the insulation is more than 15 to 20 years old, it may be time for an audit or an inspection by attic specialists. Blown-in fiberglass insulation will often settle and sag after a decade or so.

The Duration of Cellulose Insulation

Cellulose can prevent air leaks and is more eco-friendly than certain other insulation. Cellulose has even been known to prevent fires from spreading through a house, but it will depend on what started the fire. However, cellulose insulation doesn’t hold up as well over time as it is often made up from recycled materials. Its lifespan is anywhere between 20 and 30 years, and degeneration generally begins at around the 15-year mark following the installation. The life expectancy, however, can be shortened significantly by harsh weather or intervention from the exterior, but this can be said with other forms of insulation. You can sometimes use cellulose as supplemental insulation, though. So even if most of the insulation in your home is made of different materials, having cellulose present means you can start to experience a negative impact as the cellulose starts to deteriorate.
